Prostate artery embolisation

Prostate artery embolisation

Benign enlargement of prostate (BHP) is a common condition in elderly men. The enlargement of prostate often leads to urinary symptoms like frequency and urgency. BHP is commonly treated by a surgery called TURP (Trans-Urethral Resection of Prostate). However many times elderly men are unfit to undergo general anesthesia and surgery.

PAE (Prostatic artery embolisation) is offered to such patients as PAE does not require general anesthesia or prolonged hospital stay or any cuts or sutures. It is like angiography, can be done even in very week patients.

PAE is a very safe procedure. An interventional Radiologist inserts a thin needle usually in the thigh blood vessel under local anesthesia. The procedure is done under X-ray guidance (Digital Subtraction angiography). There are no cuts or sutures and the healing time is very short. PAE has been shown to reduce the size of prostate and significantly improve the urinary symptoms.
