Fibroid Embolisation

Fibroid of uterus is a common problem affecting young and middle aged women. Fibroids can cause pelvic discomfort, cramps and abnormal bleeding.

Uterine Fibroid Embolisation is a minimally invasive method for the treatment of fibroids. This involves angiography of the uterus to study the blood supply to the uterus and the fibroids. Then medicine (small embolic particles) are injected through the catheter to reach specifically to the uterus only. This results in blockage of the those blood vessels which were supplying nutrients and oxygen to the fibroids. As a result of deprivation of nutrients and oxygen the fibroids shrink in size and are absorbed by the body.

Embolisation treatment is very safe, does not require cuts or stitches, leaves no scar on skin and does not require general anaesthesia. The patient is usually discharged next day and can resume the work in a few days.

Women of all ages are suitable for fibroid embolisation. However the women who have completed their families are the ideal candidates for embolisation. Fibroid embolisation preserves the uterus and ovaries. The monthly cycles and fertility is not lost.
