Bronchial artery embolisation (BAE)

Bronchial artery embolisation

Coughing of blood or blood in the sputum is called as hemoptysis. This can be due to various underlying causes, tuberculosis (TB) being the most common cause.

Bronchial artery embolisation (BAE) is an advanced method to treat hemoptysis. BAE is basically an angiography of lungs, which helps us to study the blood supply of the lungs, to identify the abnormal blood vessels causing bleeding and to seal off those abnormal bleeding vessels. This is a very safe procedure. An interventional Radiologist inserts a thin needle usually in the thigh blood vessel under local anesthesia. The procedure is done under X-ray guidance (Digital Subtraction angiography). There are no cuts or sutures and the healing time is very short.
