Thyroid Nodule Ablation Treatment

Thyroid nodules are a common occurrence.  Fortunately most of these nodules are benign.  And They do not always require treatment but sometimes they can cause symptoms or cosmetic concerns. The common symptoms include bulge in the neck, difficulty in swallowing or breathing and voice changes.

Radio Frequency Ablation (RFA) is a minimally invasive treatment that is used to treat these types of thyroid lumps.

RFA does not involve any open surgery. It is done by inserting a thin needle into the thyroid gland. Once the needle is in the target nodule, a generator is connected to the needle and thermal energy is produced at its tip. This thermal energy ablates the abnormal tissue in the nodule and over the next few weeks to months the nodule shrinks in size and starts disappearing.

There are numerous advantages of RFA: 

1. We do not make any cuts in the skin during this procedure, therefore there are no marks and no scars. 
2. There is no need of general anaesthesia and recovery is quick.
3. In our practice we admit the patients just for one day, and patients can resume their routine work soon thereafter. 
4. During RFA procedure, thyroid gland is  not removed from the body, thus there is no need for any life long hormone replacement therapy.
